Welcome to V Reviews. My name is not V. It’s 雪 (Yuki). And I am going to use this category to collaborate with V this time. Since V recently reviewed Rides In ReVellion’s LIVE MV “GREED” recently, I decided it might be fun to compare it with their previous LIVE MV “Allergy”, even if it was released quite a bit before this one. Especially because the existence of this MV was mentioned in V’s review already. Please do keep in mind that I normally don’t review single videos like this, so I am very much following V’s lead here in terms of formatting.
Since V already gave you the primer on the band in her review (which you can read here if you’re interested), I will skip that part this time and give you a short primer on “Allergy” instead.
“Allergy” is one of the other tracks found on the “夜明け最前線” (Yoake Sazansen) single, which was released on September 12, 2023. The A-type of this single contains the title song as well as “Allergy”, and comes with a DVD containing the music video for the title song and the making for it. The B-type of the single comes with two extra tracks, namely “GREED” and a 2023 version of “Rosé”.
Despite the single only coming out in September, the LIVE MV for “Allergy” was uploaded to the band’s YouTube channel in late June already, also promoting the 8th Anniversary oneman live show that took place on July 30 at the end. “Allergy” also follows the release of the music video for the band’s previous single “モアザンワーズ” (MORE THAN WORDS), which was released as a single on March 7, and as a music video on March 4.
Now, let’s get to the main course of this review: the music video itself.
As you’d expect from a LIVE MV, this entire video is shot on a stage, but it’s not a direct take from a live performance. Instead it’s far more polished and shows the members in a much better light than you’d see normally. While there are shots of a regular live show with audience, the majority of the video focuses on the band itself and their visuals.
The song itself is definitely living up to its previous availability: “Allergy” was previously only available as a live limited song and wasn’t found on any main releases of the group. Until “夜明け最前線” (Yoake Sazansen), that is.
Dominated by an electronic sound mixing in with the sound of the instruments played by the members, vocalist 黎 (KuRo) delivers us the lyrics to a song that can only be described as a “hype-song” during live shows, describing his feelings of regret and how he’ll never forget how he turned your kindness into tears. While “GREED” is far more straightforward in terms of lyrics, “Allergy” hides quite a lot of emotion behind it’s fast and energetic rhythm. Like 黎 (KuRo) sings himself: “It poured out endlessly, adrenaline is mine, it controls the body, I can’t stop it now”. “Allergy” is the feeling of adrenaline converted into music, and when the song ends you still feel a bit of that adrenaline coursing through your veins. It’s easy to see why this song was chosen as the first LIVE MV from this single. Not only is it a very good “hype-song” like I said earlier, it’s also a great look into what Rides In ReVellion can do as a band. Maybe they’ll see you at their next live show as well? 😉

雪 (Yuki) is the owner and driving force behind Arlequin.
She originally started the project in 2009 as a photographer under the name of Arlequin Photography, but developed an interest in journalism and translation ever since. Because of these interests interviews and reviews were added to the project, until it eventually hit the limits as a "photographer" in 2021, and Arlequin Magazine was added to the mix.
雪 (Yuki) is a native Dutch speaker with a graphic design degree, which means she is also the main person behind Arlequin Creations.
After all these years she is still the main person who does interviews the interviews and live photos that you see on Arlequin, but also a large chunk of the reviews and behind-the-scenes work and communication goes through her.
She speaks Dutch and English on a native level, but also understands Japanese and German.
