Hello everyone and welcome to a special Halloween themed installment of V reviews. My name is V. And what we will be covering the band Leetspeak monsters’s wonderfully spooky track “Room 666”.
On a small side note before we get into the meat of it, fall is my favorite time of year. And so for this band to drop this song, it was beyond perfect timing. And listening to it for the first time felt like special Halloween-themed present. It gets stuck in your head like no other but at the same time you also want to dance around goofily just for the hell of it. And who knows you might also have a ghostly dancer partner as you do. It’s the season.
Now as usual here’s a short primer about band that I have to thank our wonderful 雪 (Yuki) on creating this initial description of them. “Leetspeek monsters are a ヴィジュアル系 (Visual Kei) band based in Fukuoka. Their music goes in the コスプレ系 (Cosplay Kei) subgenre, but they also make use of a gothic, punk and rock sound. They have been on the scene as “LEETSPEAK MONSTER” since June 2009. They then briefly paused their activities in 2011 to return with their horror theme and a name change to “Leetspeak monsters” in the same year, but only made the change to ヴィジュアル系 (Visual Kei) in 2017.”
Their line up currently consists of D13 (vocals & onstage presence- skeleton cemetery guide), Euskyss (bass & onstage presence- vampire prince), Yo’shmeer (guitar & onstage presence- Frankenstein’s monster) and DieWolf (drums & onstage presence- werewolf)
This song and video comes straight from their 8th maxi-single called by the same name “Room 666” that dropped on October 2,2024. Also for all you collectors out there, there are two different versions of it, the first/limited edition that includes this same video with it and the regular edition without it.
Now on with the show and immediately upon starting the video we are introduced to a gorgeously 1930’s esque detailed hotel as the song begins. It honestly reminded me of something similar to the style of the movie “Titanic” for scale of the rich opulence only spookier. Gothic and beautiful. And D13, their vocalist, is our skeleton musical guide and concierge alongside a man dressed like a butler and a young woman dancing through the hallways through the hotel.
As for the lyrics, they feel and are a fitting introduction to a legendary haunted hotel room near you. One where you might hear a whisper in your ear but no one’s there. Or you might feel or see something move out the corner of your eyes. Nothing to terrify you, but to welcome you to the show and to the season.
Once the video begins, you can’t help but think of how super lively this song is in this wonderfully gothic atmosphere. Each member pitch perfectly brings it bring it with D13’s voice being the icing on the cake. And goodness I’ve got to love the details that each man has gone through to present each onstage monster persona. From the horns on D13’s hat and his skeleton makeup, the awesomely over the top make up job on Yo’shmeer’s face, Euskyss’s elegant outfit and fangs and DieWolf’s slightly wolven appearance. I love it all. I am definitely adding this song to my Halloween party playlist.
Everything that I’ve and heard seen here has eagerly made me check out their other works so far. And spoiler alert: they do not disappoint. So to anyone who is looking to check out something on the spookier side of the spectrum I have to highly recommend Leetspeak monsters. I will be definitely watching this band for what else they come out with.
